In 2021 we assume that our business applications are mobile. We are so used to consumer applications on our phones that it comes as a surprise when the business applications are less flexible. However, mobile ERP is still a relatively new phenomenon as IT departments were reluctant to allow sensitive data to be visible on personal mobile phones.
Security solutions had to “man-up” to enable staff to work remotely. And thankfully they did, otherwise there would have been far more business discontinuity challenges during the “work from home” pandemic.
This has, however accelerated the full visibility of real-time ERP data on mobiles and it has become the accepted “norm” even including HR information, inventory, and resources. However, less “normal” is the ability to DO something with that information such as re-allocate resources or re-order inventory. This does not come down to lack of functionality, but once again it is the user identity and security barriers that needed tightening to facilitate these actions and reactions to ERP information. For businesses to experience the operational efficiencies that a fully mobile-enabled ERP can bring, they need to deliver the user the full “ERP experience” wherever they are, securely.
If you are in any doubt as to how to achieve this, start a 3rd party custodian who can manage the data governance and security foundations to enable you to take advantage of the efficiencies offered by innovation and mobility. I am a big fan of a Governance Officer to ensure you stay innovative, compliant, and safe.
